Registered Behavior Technician (RBT™)

With the Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s new RBT credential, parents of children with special needs, doctors and other professionals, regulatory and funding stakeholders can identify and evaluate standards of behavior technicians.

What is an RBT™?

The RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) is primarily responsible for the direct implementation of skill-acquisition and behavior-reduction plans developed by the supervisor. You can check your local RBT at BACB.com, click the Registered Behavior Technician tab and choose Behavior Technician Registry.

Eligibility

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Complete a 40-hour training program based on the RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) Task List.

40-Hours Training

The ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) training program is based on the Registered Behavior Technician Task List and is designed to meet the 40-hour training requirement for the RBT (Registered Behavior Analyst) credential. It is developed and conducted by a BACB certificant. The program is offered independent of the BACB.

Registered Behavior Technician (RBT™) Training

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) created the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) credential to “establish training standards for behavior technicians, the paraprofessionals who implement behavior plans directly with clients.” The impetus for the decision explained as, “[in] recent years, the number of behavior technicians has grown along with the demand for quality applied behavior-analytic services. This growth, along with requests to identify and evaluate standards for behavior technicians by regulatory and funding stakeholders, firmly establishes the need for the new credential.”- Behavior Analyst Certification Board.

In addition to the BACB’s requirements, ABA Training Solutions Philippines (ABATSPh) requires the following:

  • National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Clearance
  • Transcript of Records
  • College Diploma
  • Most recent curriculum vitae
  • Employment Certificate

After completing the 40-hours training, candidates will receive a Certificate of Completion from ABA Training Solutions Philippines (ABATSPh).

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT) may not practice independently. Each RBT must have at least one supervisor who publicly attests to supervise his/her practice. Supervisors must hold the BCBA, BCaBA, or FL-CBA credential or be a member of a professional group officially granted supervisory privileges by the BACB. In addition, supervisors of an RBT must complete an 8-hr training based on the BACB Supervisor Training Curriculum prior to supervising. Visit the RBT Credential for more information.

The RBT does not design intervention or assessment plans. It is the responsibility of the designated RBT supervisor to determine which tasks an RBT may perform as a function of his or her training, experience, and competence. The designated RBT supervisor is ultimately responsible for the work performed by the RBT.

ABA Training Solutions Philippines (ABATSPh) will suggest a list of BACB certificants who you can directly contact for supervision.

What they are saying…

It was a great experience to undergo training with ABATS. They provided comprehensive and scientific knowledge about what Applied Behavior Analysis really is. Information were backed up with data and other related journals/ literature.

The trainer explained well the concepts and principle using our native language. She provided examples that are realistic and applicable to our daily living not just to persons with disability. She would entertain questions even in the middle of discussion and immediately give answers. I love the way she give us immediate feedback during the demonstration and of course the way she “reinforce” us. She open up our eyes to the things what is really happening in the field of ABA and tell us what to do’s and what is not. She even emphasized that being a certificant we must uphold high ethical standard and provide quality services to our clients.

How can I improve myself in teaching children with special needs or typical kids?” was the question I had in mind before I started training under ABATs. I was really excited when I found out that there is ABA training in the Philippines by a BCBA since I was aware of how effective ABA science in teaching either in special or general education. I hope more professionals in education become aware how ABA works to change behavior and change one’s life. The training really helped me a lot to discover effective ways in handling behaviors especially in an ethical way.

The training is tiring yet super informative. I am overwhelmed with the lecture and workshops. Teacher Chay is a monster! A goddess! If US had their Behavior Babe, Philippines got the ABA Queen! She’s like a walking ABA Dictionary/ ABA Bixby / ABA Siri because she answered all the questions I asked even before I experience it. She’s like the lady version of Dr. Strange. She sees the future by just listening to my questions and current dilemmas.
SUPERB!!!!

ABATS training is the most learner friendly and one of the most fruitful (value for money) training/seminar I have attended by far. The modules are complete and easy to comprehend. I’m very lucky for it was Ms Kathryn facilitated our training batch. A very welcoming BCBA who will extend learning opportunities even outside training hours. One of the finest professional Behavior Analyst practicing locally.

I highly recommend ABATS to parents and professionals seeking competency on behavior modification and teaching skills to all kinds of learners.

My personal experience in with ABATS was very informative, fun and informative especially the work shop in proper stands, how to do DTT and ITT, and how to do Natural environmental teaching. They focused in each and every parts of ABA that you can use not only for the children with especial needs but also for other children too.
The trainer was very knowledgeable about ABA. She was also updated and know each and evry parts of ABA from the smallest to largest details and she also applied it in her daily life.

Overall, I had an enriching experience with ABATS during my RBT coursework. The trainers are warm and approachable; they never limit or hinder us on learning theoretical and practical concepts beyond the outline of the coursework. After my training in ABATS, I am confident that I gained a lot of knowledge and techniques on handling kids with special needs under ABA.

My first experience on ABA training was on 2010. My experience with ABATS compare to my prior training was first of all, the trainer. In ABATS, you will be trained under a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The training emphasised on the importance of data. Gathering data on behavior in measurable terms and up to date techniques on how to teach skills and/or reduce problem behavior. Also in ABATS did I realize the importance of being “ethical” and having a supervison in this kind of work.

We learned a lot from the training. The trainers gave up to date techniques and strategies that are easy to understand. They have thorough knowledge on the areas of ABA that were discussed.

I am grateful to ABATS team for the opportunity that they have given us to learn more about ABA. They have the credibility to conduct trainings and deliver it well to the participants. There is so much to learn about ABA and I am excited for the further trainings that ABATS would offer.

Registered Behavior Technician Exam Notice (as of June 2015)

Dear BACB Certificants,

We are writing to inform you about an important development regarding the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) credential. Just as with the BCBA and BCaBA credentials, the eligibility requirements and standards for becoming an RBT are evolving to meet the needs of various stakeholders (e.g., RBTs and their employers, supervisors, consumers, regulators, funders). As announced in the May 2015 issue of BACB Newsletter, our next step in the evolution of the RBT program is to apply for national accreditation of the credential. A primary requirement for the accreditation of a credentialing program is that the credential be awarded based on the candidate passing a psychometrically valid examination. Thus, all candidates who complete an RBT application on or after December 14, 2015 will need to take and pass an examination before the credential is awarded. All existing RBT requirements, including the RBT Competency Assessment, will remain the same, but will be considered eligibility requirements for the examination.

The current features of the RBT examination are as follows. The examination will be based on the RBT Task List and will consist of 75 scored items and 10 unscored pilot items. Candidates will have 1.5 hours to complete the examination, which will be administered through the network of over 400 Pearson Professional Center sites worldwide. The BACB has negotiated the lowest rate possible for the examination ($45). The examination will be continuously available and candidate results will be provided immediately on-site upon completion. Note: for logistical reasons, on-demand examinations and immediate scoring are not currently available for the BCBA and BCaBA programs.

To reiterate, the RBT examination requirement will not go into effect until December 14, 2015. Until then, the RBT application process as you may have already experienced it will remain unchanged. However, BACB staff will be engaged in numerous examination-related activities, which will require assistance from current certificants and registrants. Thus, we will be reaching out to some of you as subject matter experts for assistance with these activities.

We appreciate your continued support as we navigate our maturing profession together.
